The Shearing Shed

reservations@agrodome.co.nz

The Agrodome's authentic 1950's era Shearing Shed complete with vintage shaft drive shearing machine which is still fully functional and is used for shearing demonstrations on a daily basis.

Included in the shearing shed is a wide range of equipment such as grinders, wool presses and other shearing paraphernalia from the 1950's era.

Apart from being a fully functional wool shed which displays all of the processes involved in sheep shearing the attraction is designed to honour all of those people who made New Zealand the famous wool growing nation it is today.

This interactive attraction is dedicated to the Bowen family and in particular to brothers Godfrey and Ivan, who during their decades of involvement revolutionized the shearing and wool handling industries, here and around the world.

During their respective careers Godfrey and Ivan Bowen held more national and international shearing titles than most people alive today. The Agrodome Shearing Shed display includes a wide range of memorabilia and articles of interest relevant to the lives of these two former champions and their lifelong devotion to the wool industry.

While the theme may be mid 20th century, the Agrodome Shearing Shed is right up to date with cutting edge 21st century technology including a DVD theatre and digital projector which will display movie footage and still images digitally re-mastered from early 16mm film and historical black and white and photographs.

This facility, along with the Agrodome Farm Tour provides the visitor with the opportunity to view every aspect of wool from production on the farm, through the harvesting process at the Agrodome Shearing Shed and the final stage at the Agrodome Woollen Mill which includes carding, spinning, weaving and knitting.

The Agrodome Shearing Shed brings to life, New Zealand's early wool industry, while paying tribute to the men and women involved in the development of the industry and displays sheep shearing and wool handling in a conveniently located, accessible, visitor friendly environment.
