Agrodome Presentation of the 19 Different Breeds of SHEEP...

Welcome to Agrodome, world famous since 1970 for its quality presentation of the New Zealand sheep farming and dairy industries.

Click here for the nineteen (19) breeds of sheep that are featured during the world famous Agrodome Sheep Show Show.

Sheep Shearing

The sheep shearer works a nine hour day and in that time will shear up to 300 adult sheep or 400 lambs. The contract rate is about $1 per sheep. The shearing hand piece runs at 3000 rpm and the shearer uses a series of strokes called 'blows' to remove the wool from the sheep.

The value of the fleece is largely determined by the quality of the shearing job. It is then the task of the 'wool technician' or 'rousie' to remove dirty or discoloured wool and all the 'second class wool' from the belly/leg areas and present only the top grade wool to the presser for baling. The sheep is then turned out to pasture.

During the next 24 hours, oil produced from glands in the sheep's skin will cause the skin layer to double in thickness and keep the animal warm even in adverse conditions.

Wool, A miracle of Nature

Wool is fire resistant, a non -conductor of electricity and is able to absorb up to 30% of its natural weight with water before it begins to feel wet.

Wool has excellent natural thermal properties, strength and resilience. A product of nature, as yet unsurpassed by man made fibres.
